INNOVATION FOR AN INCLUSIVE FUTURE

CALL FOR PAPERS

This one-day workshop will develop an agenda for research, practice and policy in support of inclusive design for interactive television and converging ICT. These emerging technologies represent an unprecedented opportunity to improve quality of life for many previously excluded, such as impaired and older citizens, but also risks increasing the digital divide and perpetuating exclusion. We aim to describe and promote the advantages of designing ‘in from the edges’ of the user population rather than for some notional ‘average’ user. The workshop invites contributions from web 2.0 and iTV service designers, human factors practitioners, broadcasters, researchers, academics and students interested in design-for-all, innovation in design and the design process in general. This workshop will include short presentations themed by accepted position papers. This will be followed by breakout groups focusing on emergent issues. The final plenary session will discuss the practicalities of putting the research agenda into action. This will include setting up a network for future collaboration. Possibilities within FP7 and other funding streams will be examined. Position papers are sought from those who wish to attend. Topics include but are not limited to:

  • Design for diversity (rather than an ‘average user’)
  • Design for specific impairments
  • Inclusive and participatory design approaches
  • New interaction metaphors and models
  • Strategies for ensuring accessibility in the digital switchover

Workshop candidates are requested to send a position paper of a maximum of 2 pages. Please submit to Mark Springett [email protected]. At least one author from accepted papers must register for the workshop.
